List of Tables
THE Province of Nelson comprises all that portion of the Middle Island of New Zealand which lies to the north of the Rivers Hurunui on the east, and Grey on the west coasts, and a line drawn from the source of the former to the latter, by Lake Brunner and the River Kotu-ura-kaoka; and contains about eighteen millions of acres.
The following Returns indicate the condition of the Province for the period of twelve years, commencing from the year subsequent to the arrival of the first Colonists in 1842.
The Returns for the first six years of that period are deduced from the Statistics of New Munster, compiled in 1849 by Mr. Domett, the late Colonial Secretary; and the Returns for the subsequent years have been compiled from materials furnished by the Census taken in each year, and supplied for the Annual Colonial Blue Book and for the information of the Local Government, from various public departments and other sources.
Whenever consecutive Returns for the whole period of twelve years have not been given, those for the years 1848 and 1854, being respectively the last year of each of the two sextennial periods which the Returns embrace, are furnished for the purpose of marking the relative condition of the Province at the end of each period; from a comparison of which it will be seen that, in all the essentials of prosperity, the progress since 1848 has been rapid and steady.
S. L. MULLER, Provincial Secretary.
